Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) is the radical redesign of core business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical performance measures, such as cost, quality, service, and speed. Unlike continuous improvement methods (like Six Sigma or Total Quality Management) which focus on making small, incremental tweaks, BPR throws out the existing rulebook entirely.

Re-engineering an entire corporate architecture requires a highly structured, top-down approach. A standard BPR lifecycle follows these distinct phases:

Define Business Vision and Objectives

Design the "To-Be" Process (The Clean Sheet)

Key Strategy: They leverage modern technology (like cloud databases, AI decision engines, or predictive analytics) as an enabler to compress multi-step tasks into unified, single-person workflows.

Formulate, Test, and Prototype

Because radical change carries high risk, the newly designed “To-Be” process is rarely rolled out all at once. Organizations build small-scale prototypes, simulate workflows, or run pilot programs in isolated departments. This allows the implementation team to catch structural flaws and refine operational logic before full deployment.

Implement the Re-engineered Change

The final phase involves a massive organizational transformation. This requires migrating data, integrating entirely new technology architectures, rewriting corporate policies, and completely restructuring teams. Because jobs shift from specialized task-execution to broad, cross-functional ownership, Change Management is vital to handle employee resistance during this phase.
